The self-retaining bolts are primarily intended for use in shear applications at dynamic points in flight control linkages, engine control mechanisms, fuel controls, bell crank systems and other dynamic joint assemblies of aircraft where self-locking nuts should not be used and where the failure of cotter pin or locking wire would affect safety of flight or endanger personnel. Self retaining bolts are intended to be used with the following nuts: AN310, AN320, MS17825, MS17826, MS21224 and MS21244.
This specification covers positive locking self-retaining bolts. Classification. Bolts will be of the following types and classes, as specified (see 6.2): Types Type I - Head end actuated. Type II - Thread end actuated (solid shank). Classes Class 1 - Corrosion resistant steel bolts, magnetic (PH13-8Mo). Class 2 - Corrosion resistant steel bolts, nonmagnetic (A286). Class 3 - Titanium bolts (6A1-4V). Class 4 - Nickel Alloy (718).
