This guide contains basic information pertinent to the strengthening and repair of existing steel structures. This includes welded repairs, heat-assisted straightening, fatigue improvements, and nonwelded but related repairs such as partial or complete member replacement. The information contained in this guide provides direction and guidance for both Engineers and Contractors. Specifically, it contains background information that will be useful to the Engineer who is obligated under the “Strengthening and Repair of Existing Structures” clause of AWS D1.1/D1.1M or other contract provisions to provide a comprehensive plan for strengthening and repairing steel structures. Various repair strategies may be developed using the information provided herein and welding procedures may be developed based upon applicable AWS D1 codes.
This guide applies to existing structures made of the following materials:
(1) Carbon or low-alloy steel with a minimum specified yield strength of 100 ksi [690 MPa] or less,
(2) Cast iron, and
(3) Wrought iron.
Strengthening and repairing of existing structures may include modifications to meet new serviceability or strength requirements as well as conditions requiring repair. The Engineer should prepare contract documents for the work, including requirements for design, base and weld metals, workmanship, inspection, field requirements (traffic routes, temporary support, hazards, utilities, etc.), and documentation.
Although this guide is not written with mandatory requirements, mandatory language, such as the use of “shall,” will be found in those portions of the document where failure to follow the instructions or procedures could produce inferior, misleading, or unsafe results.
