On March 10, 2000 approximately 500,000 gallons of gasoline spilled into East Caddo Creek, which feeds into Lake Tawakoni. The gasoline spill resulted in elevated levels of the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in Lake Tawakoni. Lake Tawakoni is one of the two surface water sources that serves the City of Dallas,Texas East Side Water Treatment Plant (WTP). As a result of the gasoline spill, the City of Dallas and their consultant, Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. (CDM), conducted bench-scale studies to evaluate various treatment technologies for the removal of MTBE including: aeration; granular activated carbon; ozone/hydrogen peroxide; and, ultraviolet radiation/hydrogen peroxide. This paper provides the results of the bench-scale studies. Includes 2 references, tables, figures.
