Studies with dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) trichloroethylene (TCE) by permanganate ion (MnO4-) were conducted to determine the removal rate of DNAPL TCE using a batch technique. The study focused on understanding the fundamental mechanisms of oxidative removal and developing mathematical models of the processes capable of simulating DNAPL TCE degradation by permanganate oxidation at tested conditions. Dissolution of DNAPL TCE into the aqueous phase and TCE oxidation by MnO4- in the aqueous phase were considered as main processes affecting the degradation of DNAPL TCE in the system for modeling purposes. It was proved experimentally and theoretically that the interface mass transfer of TCE was dramatically enhanced due to the TCE oxidation reaction occurring in the aqueous phase in the presence of MnO4-. The existence of MnO4- in the aqueous phase plays an important role in enhancing the DNAPL TCE degradation. The model successfully represented the experimental system under the tested conditions.
