The qualitative and quantitative impact of process finished water quality was investigated as part of a large-scale investigation on the effect of blending different finished waters on distribution system water quality. This work was supported by the American Water Works Association Research Foundation and Tampa Bay Water. Cu and Fe release was accessed for varying water quality and pipe materials in pilot distribution systems (PDSs) that were made from unlined cast iron (UCI), ductile lined iron (LCI), polyvinyl chloride (PVS), and galvanized steel (G) pipes taken from actual distribution systems. After one year of work, field results demonstrated that nanofiltration of a pretreated surface or a blend of softened ground, coagulated surface or desalinated waters released less copper and iron than finished water produced by enhanced coagulation or lime softening. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
