With the rapidly expanding application of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), the disposal of treatment residuals has created new problems and challenges. The types of residuals and their characteristics depend upon the design and operation of the MF/UF, and the quality of the water being treated. The feasible disposal options are regulated by a number of environmental regulations. If no coagulants are used, a wider range of disposal options should be available to MF/UF facilities. This paper summarizes the characteristics of MF/UF residuals, the regulatory situation concerning their handling and disposal, and the current practices for treatment and disposal of the residuals. Includes 8 references, tables, figures.
