This slide presentation outlines Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), a formalized food safety quality assurance system that was developed for the U.S. space program by NASA/Pillsbury in 1959, and was subsequently adopted world-wide by the food industry. Specifically, the presentation focuses on AwwaRF Project #2856 with the objective of evaluating the application of HACCP in the drinking water industry to protect and maintain distribution system water quality. AwwaRF #2856 pilot studies were done by: City of Austin, Texas; South Berwick Water District, Maine; Katherine, Northern Territories, Australia; and, Sydney Water, Australia. Case studies were done by: Brisbane Water, Queensland; Gold Coast Water, Queensland; Yarra Valley Water, Victoria; Southeast Water, Victoria; and, City West Water, Victoria. Case study findings included: utilities implemented ISO systems first - ISO 9001 Quality Management, ISO 14001 Environmental Management, and ISO 4801 Occupational Health & Safety; all systems captured within an integrated management system (ISO + HACCP); water quality improvements 3 years after HACCP; utilities maintained HACCP certification; and, auditing is necessary and useful. Recommended first steps for utilities are given along with supporting programs. Includes tables, figures.
