This slide presentation outlines a source water protection program for Lake Maumelle, a drinking water supply source of Central Arkansas Water (CAW). The presentation begins with an outline of the status of the Lake Maumelle resource, including Land Use Distribution. Threats and potential impairments to Lake Maumelle are outlined, including sources of pollution and public health threats. An outline of CAW's Source Water Protection Program is provided, including the findings and recommendations of the 2004 Task Group for Watershed Management Report, impacts associated with developing 1,320 acres of unrestricted privately-owned lands, and the development of a Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan in 2005. Program summary points include: Lake Maumelle is a high quality source of inexpensive drinking water; new developments have the potential to introduce a variety of pollutants to Lake Maumelle; Caw's source water protection program has led to high quality water; the use of a zoned approach to protect water intake, in light of resource limitations and development pressures at eastern end of lake; use of land acquisition and buffers is consistent with other municipal source water protection programs; continuous effort to monitor existing pollutant sources to better assess problems; continue land and buffer acquisition and easement purchase, using a prioritization framework (e.g., zones); and, continue development of a Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan.
