Water distribution systems are highly vulnerable to various failures. The tragedy in Walkerton, Ontario in the year 2000 and the tragedy of Sept 11 2001 raised public concerns regarding the safety of water supply systems. This research assessed the potential risk associated with municipal drinking water systems. A fault tree was used to establish the structure of potential failures in the systems and fuzzy logic analysis translated qualitative risk data into probabilities. The poster paper presents fuzzy logic framework, equations, fuzzy logic methodology, fault tree methodology, and lists case studies that include: Toxoplasmosis outbreak in Victoria, British Columbia between October 1, 1994 and April 30, 1995 when more than 100 acute cases of toxoplasmosis occurred; deadly E.coli outbreak in Walkerton, Ontario in May 2000, 7 people died and more than 2,300 people suffered gastrointestinal illness; and, Cryptosporidium parvum outbreak in North Battleford, Saskatchewan in April 2001, affected 5,800 to 7,100 people.
