This powerpoint presentation provides the following overview of the project: many of the solutions and problems in environmental management have developed from black box models; new technologies have enabled us to investigate the fundamentals of these processes; a number of recent findings illustrate the potential of this approach; this requires us to re-think our processes and re-evaluate our solutions; and, there are implications for a wide range of industries including water. Implications for the water industry include: new insights are producing new technologies for water, these are in part being driven by the needs of the industry, such as: lower operating costs; lower capital costs; increased regulation; new technology adoption; incremental changes are getting harder to achieve; many technologies are mature, even membranes!; linear thinking is not an option; and, the next phase of technologies will come from outside the traditional water industry. Topics covered include: impact of bacteria; biofilm properties; biofilm development, the microcolony model; biofilm management and dispersal; novel biofilm control strategy; quorum sensing blockers; granules, specialized biofilms; applications of biotechnology; nanotechnology; pathogens - new insights, rapid detection and new control measures; and, making nano materials into macroprocesses. Includes figures.
