American Water's approach to Cryptosporidium monitoring includes: take advantage of the grandfather provision and begin monitoring surface water sources prior to the compliance monitoring period; collect 24 samples (1 per month) and use the highest 12 month mean; monitor sources with highest risk first - July 2003 to June 2005; and, monitor sources with lower risk after - July 2005 to June 2007. A statistical data summary is provided for bin classification for filtered systems, along with average seasonal variation, long term seasonal variation, and correlations with turbidity for Cryptosporidium and for Giardia.
