This powerpoint presentation presents a study on reducing sludge production at the Holland Water Treatment Plant (HWTP), in Holland, Michigan. The research found that selection of a proper coagulant in the HWTP could significantly improve the plant's overall process performance, including effluent quality, chemical cost, sludge production, filter operation, and operational control. Among the alternatives tested, alumer best meets the plant's treatment objectives with respect to effluent quality, chemical cost, sludge production and filter operation. Further process performance improvements are expected to be achieved by optimizing alum and polymer feed rates independently (rather than using a pre-manufactured blend).
