This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting information on the Falcon Waterfree Urinal System, including: a waterfree urinal saves about 40,000 gallons of water per year on average; cartridge must be replaced every 3 to 4 months; each cartridge costs $40 (includes sealant); no water can be used to clean urinal; causes odor when not maintained properly; and, mineral deposits may form in pipes behind urinals. The alternative Eco Cartridge is presented and includes: manufactured by Ecotech Water, LLC; cartridge fits in Falcon urinals; simple design, no replacement cartridges or sealant is needed; each cartridge cost about $160; and, not affected by water or cleaners. Objectives include: collect and analyze deposits in pipes behind urinals; compare extent of deposition for urinals with different cartridges; and, perform chemical equilibrium modeling calculations to assess potential for precipitation to occur as a result of urea hydrolysis. Experimental plan includes the following: remove urinals from walls in high and low use facilities that have used Falcon and Eco cartridges; take photographs to document the extent of deposition in pipes; collect precipitate from pipe; analyze precipitate using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM); predict pH increase due to hydrolysis of urea using theoretical chemical equilibrium modeling; and, predict potential for precipitation of different types of solid phases. Includes tables, figures.
