This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the formation and fate of chlorinated pharmaceutically active compounds during wastewater disinfection in Canada. Research objectives included the following: investigate the kinetics of degradation for selected PhACs when reacted with chlorine in pure water samples; determine kinetics of formation of byproducts; and, investigate PhAC degradation and byproduct formation in actual wastewater samples. Presentation summary includes the following: potential for chlorinated byproduct formation exists due to current disinfection strategies; experiments in lab water show pseudo-first order kinetics for Gemfibrozil, Naproxen, Diclofenac, and Ibuprofen; chlorinated gemfibrozil byproducts formed by zero order kinetics with respect to themselves, generally fit model for parallel reactions; wastewater trials to date show degradation of Gemfibrozil, but no formation of byproducts; and, to date, no toxicity data exists on chlorinated byproducts. Includes tables, figures.
