This paper begins by providing a brief overview of the Dublin Road Water Plant (DRWP) located in Columbus, Ohio. Project objectives were to upgrade the DRWP capacity from 65 to 90 mgd, meet existing and proposed regulations for nitrate, atrazine, and disinfection byproduct control and total organic carbon (TOC), consider innovative processes, and to minimize capital and operations and maintenance costs. Project challenges included expanding the plant within current site constraints, maximizing the use of existing facilities, maintaining plant capacity during construction, and considering Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) approvability. Upgrade and expansion analysis included a three-phased approach of condition assessment, feasibility study and pilot testing. Pilot testing included three alternatives: Dissolved Air Flotation Clarification, Solids Contact Softening, Recarbonation, Filtration, Sidestream Reverse Osmosis; Enhanced Microsand Clarification, Filtration, Reverse Osmosis; and, Immersed Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis. Includes 4 references, figures.
