This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of challenges to the Stage 2 Disinfection Byproduct Rule (DBPR) Compliance in Phoenix, and the City of Phoenix Treatment Philosophy. Background information is provided on the Union Hills Water Treatment Plant (WTP) case study, along with considerations for filter adsorbers at Union Hills WTP, using declining rate filters for adsorption, challenges of constant rate filtration conversion, granular activated carbon (GAC) replacement frequency, disinfection practice modifications, benefits of post-filter contactors over filter adsorbers, the challenge of post-filter contactors, and separate processes facilitate optimization. Key findings include the following: regulatory requirements continue to challenge Phoenix area municipalities; City of Phoenix Master Plans do a good job at setting system-wide strategies; changes in conditions require modifications; site-specific tweaking necessary; and, the recommended solution often involves balance and compromise between capital and O&M. Includes tables, figures.
