The Biscayne Aquifer is a G-2, sole source aquifer, located in Broward and Dadecounties in southeastern Florida. It is the only freshwater source capable ofproviding sufficient quantities of water to meet the needs of a human population.Because of the demands placed on the Biscayne Aquifer, from water withdrawals andthe drainage canal systems, the Biscayne Aquifer has experienced a migration ofpoorer quality water inland, displacing or replacing the native fresh water. As aresult, areas of the aquifer are no longer usable as a drinking water source. TheCity of Hollywood has attempted to address this problem by investigating the useof a salinity barrier pilot project to hold back brackish water, using reclaimedwater as the injectate.
