This paper discusses the challenges and decision process of modeling chlorides in a large regional water system in west Texas, the Colorado River Municipal Water District (CRMWD). The purpose of the water transmission study was twofold: to develop a calibrated hydraulic model of CRMWD's delivery system to act as an operational tool for future use by CRMWD's staff; and, to evaluate possible system improvements to enhance system operation and meet future water demands. The system challenges involved in this particular study were extensive, including not only hydraulic system constraints but also limited water supplies, water quality issues, integration of new water supplies, surface versus groundwater use, growth in water demands, energy costs, and the pending deregulation of electrical power. The purpose of the study was to examine these constraints and to evaluate how system modifications and additions could improve system capability, flexibility, and economy. Includes tables, figures.
