Today's water treatment plants and storage facilities are undergoing increasing rates of corrosion. With unprecedented amounts of money to be spent on America's infrastructure, the need to understand and reduce the effects of corrosion is paramount. While the use of state of the art technologies in water treatment facilities benefits the communities in which the facilities are located, they in turn bring with them inherent issues such as accelerated corrosion, concrete erosion, corrosive gasses and acidic environments. To avoid the deterioration of the drinking water's organoleptic quality, taste and odor issues need to be addressed throughout the treatment and distribution/storage systems. Understanding corrosion within America's public water supply and the causes behind it is the first step towards a solution. New technologies incorporating protective coatings, cathodic protection and metallic alloys will become necessary to maintain the public's confidence in the water treatment and storage process.
