Modeling and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) provide two different ways to view the behavior of a water distribution system. Traditionally, engineers and operators have used these technologies for different purposes. Operators utilize SCADA systems to operate and control the water system in real time, while engineers primarily use computer models for planning and design purposes. However, with the addition of improved interface tools and software drivers in recent years, SCADA and modeling have been brought together to form a powerful tool for both operators and engineers. This paper looks at the synergies between these two technologies and addresses some of the challenges that utilities and consultants may encounter as they build a SCADA-integrated hydraulic model. Actual case histories are presented of how modeling and SCADA software have been linked so that they can share data. Also, some of the issues and pitfalls in making these technologies work together are addressed. Includes figures.
