The combination of preozonation with a conventional treatment process may effectively remove organics, especially trihalomethane formation potential, with a lower risk of bromate formation. Preozonation has been applied at some water utilities. However, studies on preozonation, especially the combination of preozonation and ozone-biological activated carbon have been minimal. It is unclear how the combination of ozone-related processes can be optimized. The major conclusions of this research can help water utility managers choose operation parameters and suitable treatment processes to remove organic matter while controlling bromate. Many utilities are faced with complying with the Stage 2 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule in the near future, and this information may be helpful in choosing among treatment alternatives. Includes 18 references, figures.
