Many U.S. water agencies are operating in the business- as-usual mode when it comes to sustainability. With today's climate variability and increasingly scarce resources, utilities must look at the bigger picture; it makes sense to align today's decisions with our long-term financial, environmental, and social goals. This article outlines how one mid-sized water district has taken simple steps to be responsible to today's customers as well as to future generations. By acting now to reduce toxins, save energy, and support employee health and safety, water utilities can save money, avoid future regulatory problems, and garner public goodwill. Water suppliers can apply this information in their operations today and in the future. Many of the steps listed are not difficult. However, if a majority of water suppliers took these actions, great progress could be made in lessening the negative environmental effects and in strengthening the positive effects their organizations have in their communities, while keeping rates affordable for their customers.
