Many regions of the United States are experiencing rapid population growth and escalating demands, which put even more stress on water supplies already stretched thin to meet potable, irrigation, commercial, industrial, and ecosystem preservation uses. Thus, water providers frequently must rely on reclaimed water as an alternative supply source or use technologies on lower-quality source waters to produce potable water, which may generate concentrate waste streams. Oxidant-laden concentrate waste streams are difficult and expensive to handle. This study was undertaken to develop and evaluate a novel approach for treating such waste streams; the goal was to develop a process that was as efficient and green as possible. The process described in this article provides a solution to a challenging water treatment problem (i.e., treating high-strength drinking water treatment residuals) while producing high-quality wastewater that might be directly usable for reuse applications. This process also improves public health by converting to innocuous end-products oxidants that would otherwise simply be discharged back into the environment.
