This slide presentation outlines a pilot scale evaluation of membrane filtration for Turlock Irrigation District's new surface water treatment facility. The membrane pilot goals included: conduct pilot testing per U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Membrane Filtration Guidance Manual; optimization test phase to allow membrane manufacturers to determine optimum operating parameters; two performance evaluation tests utilizing optimized operating parameters; demonstrate two forty-day CIP intervals; confirm filtrate quality during performance evaluation testing; and, establish design and operating parameters for prequalification of a membrane system for participation in full scale procurement. Pilot objectives for water quality included: verify that membrane filtrate turbidity shall be no more than 0.08 NTU in 95% of recorded values; verify that membrane filtrate turbidity shall be no more than 0.1 NTU in 99% of recorded values and a maximum value of 1 NTU; and, 4-log LRV (Log Reduction Value) or 99.99 percent filtration efficiency at or below a removal of 3 microns. Pilot objectives for operation included: demonstrate stable and reliable performance of proposed membranes; 90% recovery ratio; 90% permeability; 90% on line factor; 40-day CIP Interval; membrane integrity verification, direct and indirect monitoring; no more than 2 fiber breaks; determine both the quantity and quality of residuals generated from the membrane products; and, experience no breaking or cracking of the hollow fiber membrane potting within the membrane module.
