The technical objectives of this powerpoint presentation included: utilization of a fluidized bed bioreactor (FBR) treatment system to treat 50 gpm of perchlorate laden water into potable water; complete treatment system consists of a fluidized bed bioreactor, aeration vessel, multimedia filter, LGAC unit, and a UV system; and, a six month testing period to be conducted for self-seeding of system, downstream equipment effectiveness, challenge experiments: feed and electrical system shutdowns, on-line nitrate and perchlorate analyzer capabilities, and chlorination and UV disinfection studies. The technical approach, technical progress, operating costs, on-going and future works are presented. Conclusions: nitrate and perchlorate removed by indigenous bacteria in FBR within 21 days of start-up; downstream equipment produced effluent water with oxygen >7.0 mg/L, turbidity <0.3 mg/L, TTHM <80 µg/L, HAA5 <60 µg/L, no E.Coli production; challenge experiments demonstrated rebound performance of the FBR as low as 2 hours (no more than 24 hours); nitrate analyzers and perchlorate analyzer were effective, a back-up nitrate analyzer is recommended, guard column to be changed out every six months; and, disinfection studies demonstrated that CT of 4 for a log 3+ removal of HPC and UV contact time of 6 seconds for a log 3+ removal of HPC. Includes tables, figures.
