This powerpoint presentation begins by outlining the project background which includes the location, the City of Las Cruces, New Mexico; the challenge being that the City has several groundwater wells that contain elevated levels of naturally occurring uranium; and the project scope of evaluating treatment technologies and assessing disposal alternatives. Topics covered include: Naturally Occurring Uranium Information; Radionuclides Rule; Uranium Treatment Technologies; and, Uranium Residuals Management. Project Status Update includes: ion exchange (IX) (non-regenerative) was selected and piloted; pilot program indicated IX will successfully remove uranium below MCL; City has not been utilizing wells that exceed uranium MCL; and, City is considering whether to abandon wells with uranium or implement IX as well-head treatment. Project Summary: there are several treatment technologies available to remove uranium; the biggest challenge by far is handling and disposing of the waste; and, it is important to fully understand and consider residuals handling and disposal methods and regulations prior to implementing treatment technologies.
