Historically, cyanobacteria blooms have been common in many of Florida's mostimportant lakes, rivers, and estuaries. However, public health concerns regarding cyanobacteria blooms in Florida have been heightened by recent increases in the frequency, magnitude, and duration of these blooms. This paper summarizes the results of a collaborative research effort undertaken to: identify surface waters that have extensive cyanobacteria blooms; collect and identify potentiallycyanotoxic species; screen samples for detection and isolation of algal toxins; and characterize algal toxins present in surface water supplies.
