The Alamitos Gap Barrier is an engineered freshwater pressure ridge designedto provide critical protection of groundwater in the Central Basin of Los Angeles County, California, from seawater intrusion. The pressure ridge is currently created by injection of potable water into the groundwater aquifer. The Alamitos Barrier Recycled Water Project (ABRWP) is being designed and constructed to conserve about one billion gallons of freshwater annually by using recycled water for 50% of the barrier's water supply. This paper provides an overview of the ABRWP and explains the importance of this program to the Water Replenishment District of Cerritos, California. Includes tables, figures.
