The presence of organic chloramine species in chlorinated or chloraminated watershas been acknowledged for some time. Analytical methods for these compounds, however, have not been readily available. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods have been under development in recent years to allow the separation and subsequent measurement of individual inorganic and organic chloramine species. A slightly different approach has been taken in this research in order to obtain an indication of the extent and kinetics of organic chloramine formation in drinking water. HPLC with post-column reaction with iodide and electrochemical detection has been utilized to determine true concentrations of monochloramine and dichloramine, and the organic chloramine contribution to the total chlorine residual has been estimated by difference.
