The Newark Water Treatment Plant is a 15-mgd facility that provides drinking water to the City of Newark, Ohio. The raw water source is the Licking River. The existing treatment train includes preoxidation, lime softening, coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, recarbonation, filtration, fluoridation, and chlorination. To provide another barrier of protection, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is being incorporated. Initial investigation included an assessment of three alternative post-filtration locations for the UV reactors. Based on economic and non-economic evaluation criteria, dedicating a UV reactor to each filter was selected as the alternative of choice for implementation. This paper outlines how the unique design challenges associated with this strategy were resolved. Includes tables.
