The paper discusses the elements of a program for providing a routine health check on filters, with emphasis on the analytical chemical and physical testing that can and should be conducted to detect early "health" problems and maintain filters in top physical condition. This paper is based on information collected from over three dozen water utilities in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia, the published literature and the experience of the authors and their associates, and included in the recently published AwwaRF "Filter Maintenance and Operations Guidance Manual". This program usually requires an inspection team with a combination of technical skills to perform all of the sample collection and testing, including plant operations, maintenance and laboratory personnel. Includes 6 references, tables, figure.
