Project goals for this slide presentation included: examine advanced treatment technologies and disinfectant combinations for estuarine water supplies; meet current and future regulations; and, meet water quality goals of water utilities. The goal of pilot testing was to examine the effects of disinfection combinations on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. The testing period was from September 2005 to March 2006. The summary of the project includes: UV-treated train lead to lowest trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) formation, followed by the advanced train; advanced trains formed higher concentrations of brominated THMs; chlorine dioxide limited bromate formation, but formed high chlorate concentrations (up to 0.96 mg/L); chlorate concentrations were highest after the advanced treatment train, followed by the UV-treated train; source water bromide concentration had a greater effect on THM4 and HAA8 formation than SUVA level; and, improving the treatment process by adding strong pre- and intermediate oxidants and UV disinfection, limit the impact of bromide on THM4 and HAA8 formation.
