This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief history of Naegleria fowleri, a disease recognized at Adelaide (Australia) Children's Hospital in 1961; first cases in Florida appeared in 1966; N. fowleri named in 1970; the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) documented 24 U.S. fatal cases of PAM from 1989 - 2000; and, in 2002, two cases were reported in each state of Texas, Arizona, and Florida.
