This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the MIEX dissolved organic carbon (DOC) process, and the Mt. Pleasant Water Treatment Plant, located near Adelaide, South Australia. The benefits of MIEX are presented, along with both conventional and microfiltration pilot plants. Granular activated carbon (GAC) evaluation is provided, along with DOC and MIB/geosmin removal. Presentation conclusions on contaminant removal indicate the following: MIEX does not appear to affect adsorption capacity of GAC for removal of algal metabolites in initial adsorption mode of GAC; impact of biodegradation of MIB/geosmin in GAC filters is greater than the impact of MIEX pretreatment; prechlorination impacts strongly on performance of GAC filters with short EBCT; pre-chlorination results in lower bacterial numbers after conventional treatment (at least initially); and, increasing GAC contact time compensates for lack of biological degradation. Includes tables, figures.
