A standardized monitoring station has been developed to solve the problems of obtaining representative water samples from water distribution systems. With its ability to control influencing factors on water quality, the station serves as an experimental apparatus and incorporates the most advantageous features of existing monitoring methods, including the following: Lead and Copper Rule sampling; standard and mini-pipe loop apparatuses; and, pipe film and scale analyses. The monitoring station has been found to be an accurate surrogate for residential sampling in the distribution system and is very handy for off-line chemical testing. Several water quality and regulatory issues can be addressed with the standardized monitoring station. On-going use of the station for collecting water quality data from a distribution system provides a means to utilize the techniques of industrial quality control and process improvement. Includes 11 references, tables.
