By combining ballasted flocculation and lamellae settling, the ACTIFLO® process has become an efficient and competitive clarification process widely known for its compactness. Further reducing the footprint of the global process is still possible by focusing on the flocculation stage. The flocculation tank can therefore be modified in order to reduce retention time and energy costs. Before decantation, water will flow into a single tank instead of two as previously designed. The new flocculation tank, the TURBOMIX®, shortens the retention time down to 3 min compared to 8 min as before. This paper presents trials carried out on an ACTIFLO® Turbo pilot unit. The TURBOMIX® process has been tested for drinking water treatment. The performance of the TURBOMIX® enables the client to apply ballasted flocculation at rise rate equal to 80 m/h. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
