This powerpoint presentation begins by providing information on the biodegradation of the following: MC-LR; multiple microcystins; single compounds; cocktail; and, nodularin - Rescobie. The isolation of bacteria is presented, including: enrichment; classical microbiology; 12 Pseudomonads and 6 Bacilli; and, carbon utilization - Biolog MT2 MicroPlate. Presentation conclusions indicate the following: microcystin degradation is more common than previously thought; pre-exposure to microcystins is not essential for efficient degradation; greater diversity of degradation intermediates suggests greater microbial diversity; natural populations appear to be more effective than individual isolates; and, Biolog MT plates can be a useful screen and have supported the isolation and characterization of 3 novel microcystin degrading bacteria. Includes table, figures.
