This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of microconstituents. This project addresses microconstituent concerns related to environmental impact. The presentation examines removal of microconstituents through various wastewater membrane processes in advanced water treatment (AWT) facilities, such as membrane bioreactors, microfiltration/ultrafiltration (MF/UF), and reverse osmosis (RO). Topics presented include: Aquatic Organism Impact - Toxicity and Hormonal Response; and, recharge modeling. Presentation summary includes the following: almost all microconstituents were removed by RO system in AWT facilities; the observed toxicity to aquatic organisms was likely caused by chloramines, which were used for maintaining RO membranes, however, toxicity was significantly removed after quenching (dechlorination); RO effluent posed no hormonal threat to tissue cultures and live fish; and, hydrodynamic models and water quality models can help us evaluate the fate and transport of trace organics and groundwater recharge. Includes figures.
