This powerpoint presentation begins by providing Stage 2 compliance methods related to reducing trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAA5), including activated carbon treatment, post-filter contactors, filter adsorbers, and biological organics removal. The use of post-filter contactors at the Northern Kentucky Water District in Erlanger, Kentucky, is presented, where adsorption data from the Ohio River was evaluated for development of post-filter granular activated carbon (GAC) design criteria. A pilot-scale evaluation at the Mohawk Valley Water Authority in Utica, New York, for the use of filter adsorbers is presented, along with a year-long pilot study at the Birmingham Water Works, Birmingham, Alabama, to evaluate the use of GAC filter adsorbers to reduce disinfection byproducts (DBPs) levels. Also, a study at the Fullerton Filtration Plant in Baltimore, Maryland, is considering all three GAC options for potential Stage 2 compliance strategies. Includes figures.
