This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the formation of iodinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and Electrospray Ionization-Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (ESI-tqMS). Study objectives were to: optimize the ESI-tqMS precursor ion scan of 126.9 with iodine-containing standard compounds; detect and identify polar iodo-DBPs in simulated drinking water with the aid of Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC); and, compare the formation of polar iodo-DBPs in chlorination and chloramination. Materials included: a standard solution of 3-iodopropionic acid (TCI); 3,5-diiodosalicylic acid, 3,5-diiodo-L-tyrosine, and 2,4,6-triiodophenol (ChemService); (E)-3-(5-iodo-2-furyl)prop-2-enoic acid, and 3-iodophthalic acid (Maybridge), dissolved in 1:1 water/acetonitrile at a concentration of 1 mg/L each. Materials also included: natural organic matter - Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) and Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA); methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE, Aldrich) and acetonitrile (ACN, SAJ) were of HPLC grade, all chemicals were of reagent grade. Methods included: total organic iodine (TOI) - a precombustion station (AQF-100, Mitsubishi) with ESI-tqMS (waters) using selected ion recording (SIR) of m/z 126.9; chlorine - USEPA method 4500-Cl F; ESI-MS/MS full scan precursor ion scan product ion scan; and, UPLC-ESI-MS/MS selected ion recording (SIR) precursor ion scan product ion scan. Includes figures.
