This slide presentation outlines a study on the capability of point-of-use (POU)/point-of-entry (POE) treatment devices as a means of providing water security. The purpose behind the investigation consisted of: Homeland Security Presidential Directive 7; Water Security Research and Technical Support Action Plan that identified POU/POE as having a potential water security role; National Research Council's review of the Action Plan; Government Accountability Office report that indicated there was a need for more research and development on distribution system vulnerability. Study objectives included: state-of-the-art review of POU vs POE, types of devices and technologies, and the effectiveness for removing Chem, Bio, Rad (CBR) contaminants; potential water security role concerning the most promising technologies/treatment trains, regulatory issues, feasibility and cost considerations and disposal considerations. The presentation compares POU vs POE, lists current technologies, commercially preferred devices, current research and ETV and TTEP results, regulatory issues, potential water security role, implementation scenarios, benefits of proactive and reactive uses, and water security limitations. Includes 6 references, figures.
