OR-20-C061 -- Performance Assessment of Hybrid (Gas Furnace + Heat Pump) Systems with Smart Switching Controls

This paper summarizes the field performance of a hybrid system (gas furnace with electric air source heat pump) operating with smart switching controls. Smart switching controls enable the system to switch from heat pump to natural gas backup during space heating operation, depending on the following:

•Outdoor air temperature

•Utility rates and time of use

•Performance of the heat pump

•Performance of the natural gas furnace

The paper presents overall energy savings, cost savings and GHG reductions. It identifies opportunities for improving space heating performance and highlights an early market entry opportunity for this type of system.
