The language around sustainable buildings has changed rapidly in the last several years. Carbon and zero carbon has replaced net zero energy and passive house as the lingua franca used for the pinnacle of sustainable building performance. In our rush to reduce operational carbon (and energy), the industry desperately needs the education, tools, and decision making methodologies that consider embodied carbon so that we do not do more harm than good when considering the total carbon lifecycle of buildings both new and existing.
