Standardizing zone air temperature setpoints for similar space types will allow the air handler to modulate its cooling capacity more effectively and can improve occupant comfort, especially for those moving from space to space in a building.

Balancing the air flow and air temperature for boxes not operating to their full capacity will allow a wider range of air handler setpoint resets. Only a certain set of carefully considered terminal units should be allowed to drive air handler setpoint resets. The controlling method for those ‘priority’ units can be either ‘worst case’ or ‘averaging’ depending on the criticality of temperature or air flow constraints in the spaces served. If selecting a ‘worst case’ control strategy, control to a value below the maximum signal value. For example, if the maximum signal value can be 160%, a worst-case setpoint must be below that value, otherwise the system will not control as intended.

An average signal of priority units must have its controlling setpoints established through analysis to ensure all spaces are as satisfied as possible. This process must be done per air handler and the terminal units selected must be served by the air handler to which their signals will roll up.
